By far, the biggest expense for any long-term traveller is accommodation. Second to that would be food. If you put the two together, well, let’s just say it ain’t pretty. I’m talking about room service. The taxes and surcharges and delivery charges alone on your order could feed a family of four in some nations. Okay perhaps I’m exaggerating here a bit. But not by much. Room service is most definitely convenient, but ordering it is not going to do any favours for your wallet.
That’s why I’m a fan of bringing my own food when I stay in hotels. If that’s not possible, I try to spot budget-friendly hole-in-the-wall restaurants and mom and pop joints in the neighbourhood. To be honest, I hadn’t put much thought into cooking in my hotel room. The fine folks at Air Transat have though.
They’ve come up with this pretty nifty video detailing some quick and easy recipes using only the hotel room coffee maker and clothes iron. You’ll have to do a bit of pre-planning to ensure you bring along the necessary ingredients, but it’s certainly worth trying if you’re on a budget. From pancakes to oatmeal to grilled cheese sandwiches, you’ll definitely not starve in your next hotel if you heed these tips
The video is part of a series titled “Tarmac by Transat” which gives viewers insider tips and insights that travellers can use on their next trip. Take a look at the video and share your thoughts in the comments section below.
