Melbourne on a Budget

by in Australia

Melbourne has lots of interesting things to see and do whilst in the city and many of these are free. This is perfect for those on a budget so take a look and start planning your visit.

Federation Square

Melbourne skyline night

Located in the centre of the city, Federation Square is where it all happens. This piazza is buzzing day and night with activities, is perfect for people watching and ideal for sampling the culinary diversity in the city. Look out for the ACMI, or Australian Centre for the Moving Image. This is celebrated in all forms from digital to TV and there are often movies broadcast here. The Ian Potter Centre tells the story of Australian Art and is another museum worth visiting in Melbourne, located in The Fed.

Ride a Tram

The City Centre Trams are all part of the Melbourne heritage and free. What could be better to see the city than by riding a tram past some of the famous sights. It is also an excellent way of getting orientated somewhere like Melbourne. There is even an audio commentary on some of the buildings and attractions on the route. You could stay on there all day listening to the tour but there is much more to see in Melbourne.

Royal Botanic Gardens

Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens are one of the most popular places to go in Melbourne with spectacular displays of sub-tropical plants, several beautiful walks, and a bird sanctuary for indigenous species. There are lakes too, and in summer open air concerts. It is the ideal place for a picnic or to wander many of the trails.

Hire a Bike

For a relatively low cost it is possible to hire a bicycle in Melbourne and explore some beautiful trails. The Melbourne Bike Share is ideal as you can pick up and drop off at many of the city docking stations by paying a subscription to suit your needs. Alongside the Yarra River is one example of a cycling route and there are many more to scenic spots. The St Kilda Foreshore or over to the beaches is another lovely route to see more of the area. Visiting the beaches is another idea for those on a budget and where a swim in the ocean is particularly refreshing after a cycle ride.

In Melbourne there is always something going on and plenty to see from Queen Victoria Market to a walk along the Yarra. There is so much to see and do for budget travellers that it is well worth a visit.
